The Batman Arkham series of games has been a widely popular game franchise among gamers with the releases of Arkham Asylum (2009) & Arkham City (2011). Personally, I rank them both in my top 10 of favorite game series (my son does too). With the Joker meeting his end in Arkham City and Mark Hamill’s announcement that he would no longer voice the Joker character after Arkham City, we were left to wonder… would there be another Batman Arkham-based game in the future?
The answer is a resounding… yes!
Much to my delight, Warner Bros. has confirmed that a third installment in the Batman Arkham series will launch in 2013. As part of parent company Time Warner’s latest earnings report last week, CFO John Martin said the company’s “strong” games release for the year includes a new entry in the series.
CFO John Martin stated,
“And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warner to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012.”
To add some validity to the claims, last month Warner Bros. registered 15 new Batman domain names, some of which include Arkham Universe, Arkham Legend, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Rises.
As far as what eager gamers can expect to see in the next Batman Arkham title is anyone’s guess at this point, but as more developments surface, I’ll be sure to keep you posted. However, separate sources from VG247 (a gaming news blog) claim that the new Arkham project is not being developed by Rocksteady Studios (the series creator), but that Rocksteady is rumored to be working on a stylized prequel Batman game that will detail the Dark Knight’s initial encounter with the Joker, which is not expected until sometime in 2014 at the very earliest. If that’s true, I wonder who will voice the Joker? My sincere hope is they’ll convince Mark Hamill to come out of retirement.
