According to an ominous Twitter post last week, some big news for Pokémon was to be announced by today, Tuesday January 8th. According to the news I’ve seen around the Internet, that big news appears to be the announcement of an all new Pokémon game for the Nintendo 3DS; Pokémon X & Y, a game transitioning into a fully 3-D world.
Nintendo announced the latest entry in the Pokémon series during a special worldwide Nintendo Direct broadcast earlier today. In it, company president Satoru Iwata revealed Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS.

The biggest element to the game’s overall appeal is the transition it takes to a fully 3D world. From watching the trailer (courtesy of IGN Entertainment), you can see how the camera dramatically pans and zooms to highlight the game play. And for the Pokémon battle enthusiast, battles will take on a much more visually dynamic look.
Pokémon X & Y will be available to all regions worldwide October 2013. This is a first for a Pokémon release as most Pokémon games have traditionally been released in Japan first, followed by regional releases about a year and a half or so later. The simultaneous launch could prove to be quite beneficial for US gamers in particular, who won’t need to rely on translated walkthroughs and guides to navigate through the game’s world.

One of the biggest (and most fun) elements to the Pokémon series of games is trying to “Catch ‘em all”, and Pokémon X & Y is certainly no different. This game will introduce all-new Pokémon, as well as old familiar ones. But like all other Pokémon games before it, players will start by choosing one of 3 starter Pokémon. The three Pokémon below fall under the usual fire- (Fennekin), water- (Froakie), and grass- (Chespin) starter types. Without knowing much about them, it’ll be hard to decide which one to choose, but being a fan of starting with a fire-type, I’m sure my choice will be Fennekin.

Fennekin, the starter fire-type Pokémon.

Froakie, the water-type starter Pokémon.

Chespin, the grass-type starter Pokémon.
What do you think? Do any of these Pokémon speak to you?
As the Pokémon series of games for the DS ranks in the Top 5 of my all-time favorite game series, I will certainly be keeping an eye for furthering information and details about Pokémon X & Y, that I’ll be sure to pass along as I learn of them.
